The first volume was published in 1977, with three more volumes following in 1978, 1980 and 1984 (the last two were released posthumously). The last volume was published on June 21, 2018, in a hardcover edition with a slipcase.
The Silmarillion is the first volume of The History of Middle-earth series and consists of five parts: AinulindalĂ« (The Creation of the World), Valaquenta (The Music of the Ainur), Quenta Silmarillion (Of the Rings of Power), AkallabĂȘth (Of Arda) and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age.
The story follows a group of characters as they struggle against evil forces attempting to destroy them and rebuild Middle-earth after it was destroyed by Morgoth at the end of The Lord of the Rings.
